Khomonani Women’s Garden in Zimbabwe

Khomonani Women’s Garden was set up by Malilangwe in 2008 (in line with United Nations Development Programme) to provide funding and support of a market garden, which is managed by a group of 21 women. The garden has a borehole, pump, and generator system, as well as a 30,000-liter water storage tank, gravity-fed canals, and storage sheds. In collaboration with AGRITEX (Agricultural Technical and Extension Services), the gardens were further improved throughout the year with cropping rotations, the development of crop plans, output market linkages, and moisture and fertility retention methods.

The project beneficiaries set up a monthly subscription fee per member, which helps them to purchase seeds and pesticides for the crops. It is through their direct involvement and management of this garden that the women of Khomonani Garden can support their families with fresh produce throughout the year, as well as sell the excess to local villages.
